Week 8: Let it Glow

Other than incense, cat naps in the sun, and your regular type A bulbs around the house, candles are the most common thing related to lighting in my daily life. Since I was really young I've enjoyed the glow that they give off, and the shadows they can create on the walls or on faces. My Grandma used to have a candle carousel (the one's with the different tchotchkes on platforms for cool shadows and fan blades on the top, so that the smoke turns the whole thing) for each commercial holiday and I was the designated candle lighter and snuffer. Since then I have always had at least a couple of interesting candle holders out, and I find having even just one lit can make for nice 'mood lighting'.

Frankie's Tiki Room in Vegas
The picture here is of a couple of m' pals in this swanky tiki bar. There were different booths and areas lit mostly by candles, and the bar itself had wacky fluorescents. I really dig the red in this picture and am a fan of this kind of lighting. There's a romantic, intimate, or sometimes creepy glow that we all recognize instantly. After our earlier lecture on the snuff boys in the early theaters I'd love to see candle-only lit theaters... even if it is kind of dangerous and gross smelling. The closest thing I can think of to that is having been to the Magic Castle in Hollywood... some rooms had candelabras, but they were definitely electronic.

  1. It is a shame that we cannot use candles more in theatre because of fire laws as nothing beats the quality

    Nice post and image!
